"Get to know staff" interview published in Chemistry Destillation 2009:
I dropped chemistry in: I have never had a reason to drop Chemistry. Probably because there is always need to learn more about chemistry topics.
What is your favourite part of your job?Having the opportunity to be part of a creative scientific environment.
What is your worst office habit?Just like in the old folk story about the alligator's son who found that the best and the worst thing in the world are the same thing - the tongue. My worst habit is the same as my best habit: I often forget to keep track of the time when I’m solving an interesting problem.
What is your favourite element?I decided to pick a favourite element especially for this Distillations feature. Iron is the element that: is the lightest element produced in fission and the heaviest produced in fusion reactions. It is an island of stability; it is found in abundance in supernovae cores; it may make a doctor consider recommending pork chops and red wine for a diet; if its atoms replace the carbon atoms in a benzene molecule it will turn into ferrous wheel; it gives its name to the heavier golf clubs in a set; plus, I like spinach.
Who is your favourite Chemist and why?I think that every person who chooses to do Chemistry and science in general needs to be noticed. Almost all of the scientific achievements that we are using today are not only the result of big discoveries but also a result of many trials and failures preceding the discoveries.
