Q: Where can I find documentation about the Spam Filtering in UTmail+ and Office 365?
The Help Desk maintains this page for information on spam and junk email blocking: http://help.ic.utoronto.ca/index.php?solution_id=2061
This page is applicable for UTORmail,UTORexchange and O365 accounts.
The first spam control step on the users side is to change the junk mail filtering level on the email account. These instructions are listed in the link above under the header 'To Change your filtering level, here's what you do".
You would also want to make sure junk mail filtering is turned on in the settings on the website. If you go into the settings pane in mail.utoronto.ca, you can search for 'block or allow' in the search bar that appears. Click on the first result and you will see an option to automatically filter junk email. There is also a Blocked Senders feature on this page which could be useful.
The Help Desk also has a page for advanced information about Spam Filtering which is targeted for more technical users and IT professionals: http://help.ic.utoronto.ca/index.php?solution_id=2062
This article is also useful for setting up inbox rules in a users inbox to filter out spam messages not caught by the filter: http://help.ic.utoronto.ca/content/84/2045/en/create-an-owa-rule-to-filter-unwanted-spam-from-your-inbox.html?highlight=spam
Most of the information in this last link also has a section in the advanced information page.
Q: Would mail forward from my chemistry account to my UTmail+ account be subject to filtering or exempt?
The e-mail forwarded from chemistry account to UTmail+ account is subject to filtering. It is not exempt.
Q: Could the chemistry department’s existing spam filters be adjusted to drop or reject all mail flagged as spam?
We will not be making any changes to the current implementation of the chemistry e-mail services. However, we are working on designing new implementation of the @chem.utoronto.ca addresses that will be integrated with the UTmail+ and rely on O365 spam filtering.
