Obtaining Ethernet Network Connections

Connecting personal computer to the Chemistry Ethernet Network is not required. University of Toronto provides wireless network for faculty, staff, students and their visitors.

If you choose to request an Etherenet Network connection, the steps are described below.

  1. You have to obtain an approval for connection to the Chemistry Ethernet Network from your principal investigator (PI). The PI has to sign a Work Order (PDF) and provide his/her FIS numbers on the work order.
  2. You have to name the PC. You can choose any name consisting solely of lower-case letters that has not been used already. We suggest to use a short name that would be easy to remember.
  3. You have to specify if the PC is a desktop, or a laptop, its CPU model and clock rate, operating system used and its future location (room number). Please, write this information on the Work Order.
  4. Once you have the Work Order ready, please deliver you PC in LM 633 for checkup and configuration. We do not require monitors, keyboards or mice. However, we would require an administrator's access to your PC.
  5. Once the Work Order has been submitted and the PC has been delivered to LM 633 it is connected to the internal protected network of the ECF.
  6. If the PC runs MS-Windows operating system, it will be brought up to the latest service pack and the most up-to-date level of patches. The system will be configured for automatic updates.
  7. Depending if you're a student, staff or faculty, the appropriate Antivirus software will be installed to the user's computer. Please refer to the UofT Antivirus for more detail.
  8. The SpyBot anti SpyWare software will be installed on the PC. The PC will be checked for presence of any SpyWare and the discovered SpyWare will be removed. The PC will be immunized against SpyWare.
  9. The PC will be checked for presence of any copyrighted material (movies, music etc.). If such material is discovered, you will have to provide the ECF with a proof that this material has been obtained legally. If such proof is not forthcoming and you still want to connect the PC to the EN, the material will be removed from the PC.
  10. Any P-2-P file sharing software will be uninstalled. We do not allow software like LimeWire, mIRC, KaZaa, BitTorrent and such on the EN.
